Move over Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Petra, Great Wall and co. the people of Instagram have chosen 7 new “world wonders”.
Current World Wonders vs. Instagram Wonders
In 2007 the list of the 7 “modern” world wonders was released. The chosen sights were awarded the status of a world wonder based on over 100 million votes cast from people in 200 different countries. The list of the New 7 Wonders of the World was announced during a festive ceremony in Lisbon.
The “modern” 7 world wonders are:
- Chichén Itzá, Mexico
- Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
- The Great Wall, China
- Machu Picchu, Peru
- Petra, Jordan
- The Roman Colosseum, Italy
- The Taj Mahal, India
Other contenders that didn’t make it onto the final list were:
- Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt
- Acropolis, Greece
- Eiffel Tower, France
- Angkor, Cambodia
- Moai statues, Easter Island
The vote faced a lot of criticism due to unscientific methods and unfair advertising. UNESCO stated that world wonders shouldn’t be up for a popular vote but based on scientific and historical facts. I wonder what UNESCO would say about what’s coming next – the 7 world wonders based on Instagram hashtag data.
According to a data evaluation of Instagram hashtags conducted by the airport trainsfer company Hoppa the most posted and most visited places are not what has been on the list of world wonders.
The 7 Instagram World Wonders are:
- Magic Kingdom, USA
- Red Square, Russia
- The Louvre, France
- Opera House, Australia
- Burj Khalifa, UAE
- Sagrada Familia, Spain
- The Shard, UK
The top attraction according to Hoppa is the Magic Kingdom in Florida with almost 4 million mentions of the #magickingdom hashtag, which is 4 times as many as #colosseum. Even more significant is the number of annual visitors in comparison – Magic Kingdom attrackts 20,4 million people a year while the Great Wall attrackts 10 million and the Colosseum is visited by 4,2 million people anually.
On the 2nd place is Burj Khalifa in Dubai with over 2 million mentions of #burjkhalifa, closely followed by #louvre with almost 2 million. Who knew that people preferred the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower…
